3 spaces to declutter prior to Christmas

Christmas tree with the text "3 spaces to declutter prior to Christmas" written over the top of it.
If you are hosting Christmas and you are worried about the state of your home here are the 3 spaces to concentrate on:

1. Food storage areas e.g. pantry, fridge, freezer

There is always an overabundance of food over the holiday period. To make way for the holiday goodies, clear out any expired food (into the green bin or compost), donate any unwanted pantry items to Foodbank (check their website for details) and get creative to use up any items you have in excess (I see you tinned tomatoes).

2. Common areas e.g. lounge room, dining room, main bathroom

Take a moment to think about how you use your home over Christmas.
  • Do you spend most of your time in the lounge room with the family?
  • Do you like to have a nice sit-down meal? Or are you mostly outside?
  • Do your guests use the main bathroom or just the attached toilet?
Whatever spaces you use most during this time concentrate there first. Other areas of your home can wait.

3. Kids zone

Please, please, please talk to your kids first! Don’t just go in a chuck everything out, that is a recipe for disaster. I am suggesting talking to your kids about Christmas and discussing how they will likely get new toys, games, and books. Ask them if there is anything that they would like to let go now of so they can make space for these new items.
  • If they let go of nothing, that is OKAY! Try again in January.
  • If they let go of 3 things, great.
  • If they let decide to do a deep dive and let go of lots of things (even some that you aren’t sure about), then respect their decisions, pack that stuff up and go take your kid to donate the items. Seriously respecting their choices will far outweigh any regrets they MAY have.

Okay, so I cheated a little bit

There are more than 3 spaces here, I am not saying you have to do them all though. I suggest picking 3 – one from each category and making a start.
For me, it is always the fridge, lounge room, and a quick session with my daughter to see if there is anything she would like to part with. Trying to do the whole house when I have so many other things to do is just overwhelming.

So I concentrate on the parts that need it.
