Organising Winter accessories

Organising Winter accessories

One of the biggest contributors to clutter in our homes during the cooler seasons are all of the winter accessories. I am talking coats, jackets, scarves, beanies and gloves. Here are some simple ideas to help you manage these items.

Easy storage options

Baskets, hooks, coat hangers and over the door organisers are all cheap and effective storage options. You probably already have something in your home that would do the trick, so shop your home first before you go buy new.

Create ‘homes’ for them, even if it’s temporary

Store these items in a location that makes sense for their use. E.g. placing a basket by the front door, that way you are putting them away when you first walk in the door. Creating homes also means that you know exactly where to return items to if you do find them elsewhere in the house.

Think vertical

Utilising vertical space is a great way to instantly create more room in your home. If you don’t like visual clutter the back of a door is a great place to use. It is easy to access but is out of the way.

Coat hanger trick

This is by far one of my favourite ways to store scarves in my wardrobe. I simply tie them over a coat hanger. This means that when I go looking for a scarf everything is really visible and I know exactly what I have.

Re-access your collection

I couldn’t write an organising post without mentioning decluttering in some way. It really does help to identify if you still like an item and it actually works for you. An easy way to do this is to turn all of your coat hangers around the wrong way. At the end of the season you can see what you haven’t used.

Now is time to start looking at your winter accessories and figuring out what you are going to do with them. Create homes or  let them go. There are plenty of people out there who could benefit from items you no longer want or need so there is no longer a need to hold onto things you aren’t using or loving anymore.
