7 things that you can recycle that might surprise you!

7 things that you can recycle that might surprise you!

It is National Recycling Week this week (13th – 19th November) and as such I wanted to share some surprising household items that CAN be recycled (but just not in your yellow kerbside bin). They include:

1. Textiles

Textiles  (clothing/towels/bedding etc) – textiles that aren’t suitable for donation e.g. ripped, stained, damaged etc can be recycled in a number of different ways. Sheridan (for bedding), H&M and Zara (for clothing) and my personal favourite Upparel are just a few companies that offer textile recycling.

2. Shoes

Shoes – this was one that really blew my mind when I found out about it. Shoes can be recycled! Treat Lightly has numerous drop-off locations in stores such as Rebel, Athletes Foot and Sportspower. Total Workwear also has a recycling program for workboots.

3. Paint

Paint – Paintback allows you to bring in unused and unwanted paint, so that can be recycled and or disposed of correctly. Head to their website for drop-off locations.

4. Pens

Pens – Officeworks is one of my favourite places to recycle office items, the main one being pens! So next time you clear out your office remember to bag them up and take them to Officeworks. You can also recycle e-waste, batteries and ink cartridges with them too.

5. X-rays

X-rays – did you know that X-rays contain silver?! So rather than throwing them in landfill when they are no longer needed, send them for recycling so that the silver can be extracted. Here is a link to find out where.

6. Toys

Toys – Toys for Joy is a relatively new program that has been running between Big W and Terracycle in which they accept broken toys for recycling. Just look for the green bins inside the Big W stores and make sure you check their website for acceptable items.

7. Car seats

Car seats – if you live in South Australia you can recycle your car seats through the RAA service centre at Mile End. There is a $5 charge but well worth it in my books.

So there you have it! Did you know that these 7 household items can be recycled?
